CTS Water Microbiology offers professional E coli test services to detect the presence of E coli and other potentially harmful microorganisms in water samples. An E coli test is often carried out following a Faecal Coliform test.
Our E Coli Test Services
Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria are a key species in the Faecal Coliform group, found in the intestines of humans and animals. There are several types of E coli, and while some are harmless, others can cause a variety of diseases.
An E coli test can be carried out to determine the presence of the bacteria in different potable water sources. At CTS Water Microbiology, we offer accurate E coli testing and analysis from our UKAS*-accredited laboratory based in Leicester.
Unlike other labs which simply provide you with the test results, we specialise in solving water-related problems. Our experts can help you understand the sources of contamination and recommend reliable, cost-effective ways to eliminate them.
Importance of E coli Tests
While most E coli bacteria are harmless, some specific strains can cause illness when consumed. E coli O157:H7, for example, releases a powerful toxin that damages the lining of the intestine. It can cause diarrhoea, haemorrhagic colitis, and haemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS).
E coli comes from animal and human faecal waste, which may be washed into water bodies during heavy rainfall, snow melts, and other precipitation. When these water sources are used for drinking and are not properly treated before consumption, E. coli O157:H7 may infect large numbers of people.
E coli Test Services from CTS Water Microbiology
A positive E coli test does not mean that a dangerous strain is present, and in most cases, it probably is not. However, it does indicate recent faecal contamination (whether from animals or sewage), which may mean that the water supply is polluted with other dangerous microorganisms.
Common systems that should be sampled and tested for E coli are:
- Health care premises (incl. care homes)
- Large buildings operating to BS 8558:2015
- Boreholes, wells & private springs
- Poultry / broiler farm drinking lines
- Anyone who needs reassurance of the quality of their drinking water
With over 24 sample drop-off locations across the UK and Ireland, you are only minutes away from your samples being taken to the leading provider of UKAS*-accredited water microbiology testing services.
